Boteillon

When we had dinner the other night, Juan told us about Boteillon, a long standing tradition in Spain for young people that refuses to die despite the best efforts of government and law enforcement. It's basically outdoor drinking in large groups.  Many young Spaniards don't have a lot of money, but they like to party, so they collect in the squares and plazas with a couple of six packs and hang out.  In Madrid, the Chinese in particular seem to be the vendors of choice for Boteillon, as they are on every street corner selling single cans of Heineken.  It looks like large scale Boteillon is not tolerated - Bryce and I walked through Plaza 2 Mayo after a late dinner and saw a police presence there, presumably to enforce the law.  But in smaller plazas and street corners, you can see it in action. The last time I was in Spain ten years ago, I saw it in Malaga in a big way, with an entire huge plaza filled with young people drinking.  Hopefully we'll see it in Sevilla and I can get some photos.
