Gibraltar

Besides being a bucket-list sort of thing to do, Gibraltar has always been fascinating to me because of its size and location.  It is a tiny country on a peninsula of Spain, held by the British forever, and surely a point of contention between the two countries. It was on our way up the southern coast of Spain, and so we decided to visit yet another country for a day – because we could.

Gibraltar has two main attractions – the Rock of Gibraltar, and the apes who live on it.  Both are accessible from a cable car (tram) ride which takes you to the top of the rock.  We parked our rental car in the parking lot next to the cable car, looked around for unsavory characters who may steal our luggage, and felt good enough to chance a ride to the top in the cable car.

At the top, we were greeted by many of the macaque apes who live on the rock. They were just hanging out, very comfortable around the other apes (us).  They posed for pictures, groomed each other, and were pretty much everywhere.  The kids found them quite interesting.

The view from the top of the rock was awesome.  It’s the only place in the UK you can see both Spain and Africa.  The straight of Gibraltar is 8.1 miles wide at its narrowest, and you can see a rock similar to Gibraltar’s rock on the other side of the channel.  (Why isn’t the other rock as famous?)

After an hour gazing at the monkeys and the views, we were done and ready to continue our journey back into Spain.
