Arcos De La Frontera

We arrived back in Spain from Morocco today, and began reuniting with the first country of our travels.  This phase of our trip will be Southern Spain, with some beach time thrown in - especially for the kids.  We flew back into Sevilla, rented a car, and drove to a cute little town called Archo de la Frontera.

This part of southern Spain is known as the "white hill towns".  Why? Because the buildings are all white, and they are built on hills. he "frontera" part of a lot of these town names means "frontier".  This area was constantly changing between control from the Moors to the south, and the Spaniards to the north, and the locals got sick and tired of being raided all the time, so they built their cities on top of hills as natural fortifications.  And the "white" part - apparently it gets really hot here, so the white buildings help keep everything cool.

Arcos de la Frontera is a cute, quiet town (especially compared to Marrakech), and it was a nice respite for us.  We found our hotel, parked, and enjoyed walking through town, having dinner a a local cafe, and enjoying the views. It's very picturesque too.

Sue was sporting her white hill town camo outfit:

The kids showed off how narrow some of the streets were:

And Sue got some cool photos of the local churches near sunset:
